Alternatives for early MM front shocks?

I'm taking as much weight as possible off a 1997 mountain max. The front shocks are very heavy, appear to be steel with a red over spring. Is there a front shock from another Yamaha model that has similar compression characteristics that will work on the 97 and offer a weight reduction? I think the over spring rate on the stock 1997 shock is 2.1 kg/mm.

Thanks. I'll probably leave it stock for now. Fox floats are probably the way to go but too much money. Looked at a Crazy Mountain Extreme that used them. Juicy.
