What is the correct procedure for tensioning the chain on an older (94-96) V-max? I am fixing my buddys -96, and noticed the tensioner is spring loaded. Any input appreciated!!

It's too simple :D

1. Loosen the locknut on the adjuster bolt.

2. Turn the adjuster bolt clockwise until it's finger tight.

3. Hold the adjuster bolt in place then tighten the locknut.

Ok thanks, same procedure as on a non-spring preloaded one then? What is the purpose of the spring anyways?

The spring tensioner's job is to cushion the slack action in the chain to help prevent breakage.

Chain breakage is most often caused by a sharp, sudden load. The spring tensioner works to even out the load and make it more constant.
