Battery charger was hooked up backwards (don't ask).
Regulator fried.
No evidence of burned wires.
Borrowed regulator from 95 Vmax 500.
Just in case I installed 12V test light in line with battery ground.
If I disconnect either the regulator or the stator plugs light goes out.
Stator checks OK with ohm meter.

ANY IDEAS APPRECIATED

Thanks in advance

First thing I would do is "ohm out" the harness between the regulator and the magneto, the regulator talks to the magneto and if you have two wires shorted, connecting either end will complete the short.

...what happens when you disconnect the CDI?

Thanks for the reply.
I will try as you suggest with the ohm meter.
Disconnecting the CDI does not have any effect.

So far, when I put a test light in line to the negative side of the battery. it shows a draw. Then I started disconnecting every connector on the sled. The only way the light goes out is when I disconnect either the regulator or the stator, either one stops the draw. With the stator plug disconnected and the regulator attached the light is out. If I connect the white wire at the stator the light comes on. I'm starting to think I fried the stator.

Stay tuned
And thanks again
