98 SSX project sled

Here is my 98 SX I picked up with a bad crankshaft. Lack of cleaning the carbs cause lean condition and we all know what happens then. My plan is to restore the sled fix some battle wound and bring it back to looking like it should. I would like to make it trail rideable but also be able to radar run it so any advise or ideas would be welcome. Some other things I would like to do is repaint hood and fix back edge where they like to crack, replace cracked belly pans, maybe polish tunnel or repaint it ( looking for advise on this) new rebuilt engine possiblity a 600 twin with a BIG BORE 700 kit, new bearings in drive, bearing in suspension, plastic skis, etc. I will keep you all informed of the progress hope to be on the trails with it this coming winter. :2strokes:

sx update

Here are some more pictures of tunnel with paint stripped off and also pictures of the polishing underway. Lots of work but oh so worth the time and effort. I will keep you all posted.

Brake Rotor

I have a question today I pressed the brake rotor off the jackshaft and found it didnt have a key in the keyway and also the key way was not lined up not sure why the key was missing and not sure if the sled was apart before as I bought it used with a bad motor. I am sure that there should be a key in the keyway but my question is this is the brake rotor a press fit on the shaft or a slip fit on the shaft. Also in need of a good brake rotor looking for a lite weight performance rotor anybody have one or could anybody let me know what is the best rotor for the money. My old rotor is out of true by .040 and too thin to true it up so that why I need on. Thanks Eric

Are you still going to put a bigbore kit on that thing? Let me know how that turns out.

do a search, but i do believe newer model sled rotors are lighter than the one your taking off (not an aftermarket light weight type, but a cheap upgrade to a lighter rotor, especially if yours is in bad shape)

Changing Color of plastic

Has anyone painted the bumper covers and snowflap to change them from black to say red? Just wondering if anyone has what was the results and what kind of paint was used. I know you can get paint for plastic from wal-mart I painted some lawn furniture with it and had good results but not sure how it would hold up in the cold and snow. Looking for your comments. Progress is slow on the project sled waiting for my parts to get back from the powdercoating guy. I have all my suspension wheels, bearing, and slides so as soon as I get my painted parts back I can start putting back together.

I dont know about painting but go to cyclepartsnation.com and you can get an oem 04 viper red snow flap for $26.59 (#8cr-77595-10-RD) brand new. just put one on my 96xt. looks sharp. Worth a look.

Progress is slow but steady

Got a chance to work on the ssx today. Here are some pictures of the progress. My parts that are out being powdercoated are suppose to be ready to pick up the middle of the week. Can't wait he's had them for 7 weeks. Then progress will be faster.
