I guess there are some people here who ones rode or maybe still is riding one of these nice sleds. Please be free to share everything you know about them, all experiences and everything else there is to know about these sleds.

What will work, and what doesn´t work, is it still possible to find aftermarket parts? Is there people out there who specialized in these parts and maybe reproduced some of it?

What is a good clutch set up? How do i tune them, what gearing is prefered? Which track can i use? Whats the secret behind the Terminator? Well this old sled have alot of history, and there are many questions that goes along with it, please contribute in the way you want.

There isn´t much information about exciters on the internet as you might noticed. (they are too old to notice ;) This is an attempt to gather some information and exciter related links in the same spot.

Great questions! Everyone who does know these answers seems to be pretty tight lipped about them. Taking the secrets to the grave I guess. Lol :o|

Here is what I have found from my research so far and what others have told me concerning the 87-89 EX570.

Stock clutching works good all around. Some people put just a slightly higher preload spring to bring up the engagement. My experience with Yamaha in those years is that their clutching was pretty darn good. I will be able to give more feedback on this once I get mine on the snow.

Gearing: Common change is to go to a 16T top sprocket. That brings your gear ratio to 1.94. Depending on your weight and conditions you ride in my experience is that running 9 tooth drivers you want to be real close to 2.0 for trail riding for best clutch efficiency. 16/33 gearing would accomplish this.These companies are just now figuring it out that you don't need to gear sleds for over 100mph when most are not capable.

For pipes it looks like DG and Aaen are still making them. Looking at dynotech the Aaen pipe worked better on the 87-89 exciters than it did on the exciter II or SX. The DG is rumored to be a good copy of the PSI which was supposed to be the hot ticked on these sleds.

Wiseco replacement pistons for the exciters are a close copy to the Yamaha SX pistons.

1988 That has the final jetting with updated jet needle/ needle jet. Scroll down to the tech bulletins.
1990 Scroll down. This shows how to delete the power jet and the proper length and routing of the carb vent lines.

If I remember correctly the bottom end was also used in the vmax 500's.

I noticed that the limiter straps on the rear suspension could be lengthened especially in the front as they are not allowing for full suspension travel. Not by much though as you want to be careful not to top out the shock.

An old trick on the Phazers and I assume the exciters is to use pipe wrap at least on the front straight section of the pipe. This helps keep heat in the pipe since the hood vent directs air straight to this area.

I will add what height you can add for a riser when I get that far on my project. As well as any other useless info I can come up with. :dunno:

I believe the balancer was another attempt to smooth the harmonics and therefore cure the suposedly foaming of the fuel in the float bowls ? On my 88 which I bought new in 89 my dealer installed PSI needles, removed the pwr jets, update jetting and installed the updated 89 airbox and it was trouble free for the 5000 plus miles until I sold the sled and the next owner I saw him a couple years later and no troubles ! We also, had Benders direct oil injection kit from day 1 !

Got my engine torque arm today, found it on ebay, god bless america whooo haaa! These things are pretty rare in sweden, really hard to find.

 
psi found the motor wouldnt hold up with there twin pipes and increased rpm's unless it had electric start so they made a flywheel balancer kit that needed to be welded to the flywheel,they also made some twin pipes for lower rpm,junk,around 1990 yamaha updated the flywheel,i just swapped my original one to my new motor,heres a pic of the balancer i took off

PSI also made some twin pipes for lower rpm, junk.
Around 1990 Yamaha updated the flywheel.
I just swapped my original one to my new motor.
Do you have pictures of the different flywheels ?

i dont have any,sorry,i was hopeing someone could tell the difference between old and new,i dont even know which one this is.i do know the one i put on has the starter ring welded on it and is heavier so i used it

I know this topic has been somewhat beat to death, but concerning direct oil injection.......Spoke with a friend of mine the other day who was a Yamaha mechanic back when the exciters first came out. He said that it had gotten to the point that they were installing the direct injection right out of the crate. He said it is an insurance policy and is a better idea especially if you have any mods. Even if it is just a pipe. I trust him and he is a top notch mechanic so I put mine back on.
 
I got rid of everything and mix it straight in the gastank, feels like the safest way..... Talked to my cousin last week about this and he will also get rid of everything on his ex2.

There is also another positive aspect of removing the oil tank and so on.....SPACE:)

What about unifilters? I got rid of my airbox and bought a couple of these filters. It sounds really great but it´s almost like driving with the choke on.. Is this a waist of money or what?
