Hey guys, this is my project, a 1970 SS 338. I'll post a thread once its done, if that ever happens. lol. For now I'm looking for suugestions for an oil pump cable. This is a 1977 340 Exciter engine all freshened up with Enticer heads, some porting, firestorm electronic ignition etc. Shown is the stock Exciter oil pump cable which looks like crap aside from being too long. Before I go looking for a new cable does anybody have any suggestions for a shorter oil cable that will work? My plan is to run the oil pump cable to a 98 YAMAHA throttle with a two into one throttle cable. Perhaps a similar year GP 440 cable? Are they shorter? Thanks for the input.

How's it going Gord?? Good to see your back at it. I do have a suggestion. I would use a vmax540/ Exciter 570 throttle block. This will make things much easier. If you get me the length of your current oil pump cable, I can then see if I have something shorter that would work for you.

I saw a post where a guy had a motorcycle shop make him a cable to length for him. May be a choice. I have a 1970 SS 396 that I need to restore. Need to find a donor 433 motor to replace the 338 I have in it now. Good luck with your project.

I was wondering about making a cable, I think I once saw ends that you can buy for that purpose...somewhere!?...
I'll round up an Exciter throttle block and measure the cable but its all at the farm and I won't be there for a couple weeks now. The cable is an early exciter cable, if you have one of those around that's the length is the best I can do right now. Thanks.

Okay, the salvage yard does not have a throttle block from either of the suggestions. I looked at a Phazer throttle block and it really doesn't look much different except for the throttle lever itself. Can you tell me why one of these throttle blocks is a better choice? Also, if anyone has the head torque specs on my 338 could you please freshen my memory. GYT 433 gave them to me and I save them to my computer but if you think I can find them.....geez Thanks.

Hey gord, the difference in the throttle blocks is that the Vmax 540 and Exciter 570 block and lever accept both the oil pump cable and throttle cable. Im assuming your going to running mikuni carbs?? I believe the torque for the head bolts are 24ftlbs for the large diameter head/cyl nuts and 18 ftlbs for the smaller head nuts.

Gord, What size carbs? How long of a cable would be ideal ? this will tell you what throttle block to run as far as carb size ..... then to find you a cable

The oil pump cables that I have measure 37". That is the jacket only. The inner cable is obviously longer.

The throttle block I was planning on using has provision for the two cables. So I'll be good as soon as I get a cable, just wasn't sure of you reason. I haven't been to the farm yet to check the length. Without the sled in front of me I would say that 30" would be bout perfect length. I can probably make an Exciter cable work if I run it through the dash and loop it back out again. I need a new cable but I thought while I was at it I would try and see if I could get shorter one and do without this big loop on top of the engine. I can't see it having to do much more than go up from the pump, cross the steering post and into the throttle.
Hmmmn, just had a thought about threading the cable hole in the pump and using a thread/lock nut adjuster from a parts sled with a one piece cable. This one has the adjuster in the middle of the cable. Gotta get to the farm and take some measurements but I'd bet on 30". Thanks guys.

The plan is to run 36's. Missed a pair of used LECTRONS for cheap on evilbay! Still looking. Was going to buy new mics online until the dollar dropped, now they're 30% more! YIKES! I am going to the farm today and will measure it.

Well I finally made it out there and tinkered on the sled for a bit. The cable casing should be 30" with the cable length at 34" for enough to wind up in the pump. That would have to have the 3/16 X 1/8" barrel on the end to fit the pump with the full size YAMAHA barrel on the throttle end. My other trouble is these rubber/plastic ends on the cable. So very attractive. Was thinking of looking for a NOS cable for an Exciter just like this one which would come with this new, but its really too long. So I got my fingers crossed that somebody here can help in some way. Thanks.
