I'm looking at buying a vmax SX 700 for my first sled. I know its a monster for my first sled. But I have experience in racing motocross and ATV's so, I should catch on fast. I guess my biggest question is how reliable is the power plant in this 700 triple?? I already know it's fast has hell. The other sled I was looking at getting a good deal on with low miles, is a Arctic cat ZL440 which is a dog compared to the Vmax. To be honest speeds not my biggest thing. I want to make sure it gets me back home in time for a hot meal!! I want it to be fun fast but not crazy, If that makes scents ?? Thanks for any feedback.

Buy the Cat. It will never run long enough to get you far enough away from home to be late for dinner.
Only buy the Yamaha if your goal is to have so much fun riding a sled that you don't want to go home.

I had close to 12000 miles on my 98 700 before the motor went bad, I think that's pretty reliable.

I know this is a yamaha site so most answers will be biased but the red head 700 motors are absolutely bulletproof.

About a decade ago I was asking myself the same question about a 97 Vmax SX7 and a Cat Powder Edition. I believe it was the ZL sled w/ longer track and it was white.
The Cat was definately a looker. I almost got it just because it was so damn sexy. A little voice inside my head swayed me to the SX7. I bought the red beast and NEVER regretted it for a minute.
I found out after that season was over that the very Cat I was looking at, had blown a crank during the winter months. I believe with the ZL models, their crank shaft was their Achilles heal.

What did you get?
I started snowmobiling last year and I have one of each and everyone wants to ride the Yamaha. Honestly they are both nice sleds and I spent a lot of time riding the CAT last year while my wife rode the SX700 (way too slow). She liked the feel of the bigger sled. The CAT was nice but certainly doesn't have the same performance. I finally had to buy a Venture for her so I could get the Yamaha back. I did put 160 mi on the CAT one day and I would buy another of those for the kids.
