Bought a mountain viper with a lot of details unknown. Here is what I found. Compression was actually okay but I wanted to do a opticool and srx base gasket for my triple pipes. Plan was also to do new piston rings. When I got the head off I noticed its all gouged up. Do I need a new head? Other than that the pistons like great and so do the cylinders. I am assuming they are all oem.

I know lots of guys run mangled up heads like this but... my theory is that those dings create hot spots which can further affect the head negatively and also transfer those hot spots directly onto...you guessed it...your piston. Guess what happens next. Get rid of that thing. Pull your cyls and measure the bores. Then measure the pistons and compare to make sure they are within the wear spec. Think of pistons as a set of brake pads on your truck. It's a wear item. They need replaced at least every 5000-6000 miles... In my opinion.

Yes. This has 4200 miles on it. The last viper i did i cant remember much from. This one has a little side to side play it seems in thebconnecting rods. Is that normal?

Yes a bit is fine as long as the rods are tight when you pull up and down against the crank as opposed to side to side
