Srx chaincase question

In the 2001 srx chain case, does the lower bearing have the shield installed or is it open to allow chaincase oil to lube it? I just took one apart that has never been apart and the oil side of the bearing has the plastic shield installed, while the outer side does not. Is this correct?
 
Hey Joe - Put it back together with the bearing seal just the way it was. This question come up alot.
 
There is actually alot of junk floating around in the chaincase, fine metal particals, that seal keeps the that stuff out of the bearing.
 
yup, seals facing the oil. the dust seals will weep with normal operation and lube the bearing, but keep the metal out.
