is there any down side to leaving the t-stat out?

Without the thermostat it isn't going to warm up as fast increasing your chances of a cold seizure.

So perhaps i should leave it in? The 2001 sled i just took apart had a perfect t-stat. I have not checked my 2001 with 8000 miles but i will. Never heard of one going bad.

I would leave it in, it's there for a reason!

It's been debated before. Without a t-stat you will need to put a plug (with a small hole drilled into it) in the small hose leading from the t-stat housing to the coolant bottle. This allows/forces the coolant to constantly circulate through the ENTIRE cooling system all the time as apposed to circulating through the motor until the t-stat opens which then pushes a large volume of COLD COOLANT to enter the engine just when your about to hit the throttle. I use this setup in both my SRX's with no concerns and no issues, warm up and go. More consistent temps verified with temp gauges. Your choice!
