Just picked up a relatively low mileage 02 Viper ER with about 3,000 miles, very clean unmolested sled.

I vaguely recall the 02's rode like trucks and Yamaha had a program to replace all 4 shocks with new, is there a way to tell if that was performed?

Performance:
Is it worth putting on Vforce reeds? I won a raffle for any Vforce reeds I want so debating between my KTM or the Viper. Any sweet recommended setups for this sled like a clutchkit? Also curious if folks put on the transfer-rods like we used to do on the SRX's?

I was trying to hunt down a pristine SRX700 (2000-2002), stumbled across this deal and I'm not getting any younger so the thought of electric start and reverse were intriguing and I like the Red.

Long-term plans:
Ride the sled relatively stock, perhaps a clutch kit. I'm concerned it won't have the pull/power of my SRX's but I've got a new 800 Switchback on order for my modern sled and just came off a boosted Procross turbo; (dang, I wish Yamaha would make a triple 2-stroke again!).

I'm toying with making this a tinker toy and minimally putting triples on it. If I stumble across another motor I might go all out with big-bore kit, but I'm not tearing into this motor and would only do bolt-on's. Debating whether I leave it alone or make it a sleeper sled, time will tell.

Can't wait to hear that triple sound this winter!!!

Thanks for the link catnviper!.

I'm addicted to that triple sound and don't necessary have to tweak to make this my fast/fastest sled. Doubt it will run with my new Axys Switchback 800 and I just got off boosted turbo Procross cat that was in the 270hp neighborhood and still have a Retro Firecat.

I think a lot of the pleasant triple sound on the Yamaha's is the intake sound. If concerned about ultimate performance I would have gone with an SRX. There is just so much performance left on the table with these sleds.

The average/stock Viper seems to be about equivalent with the current 600 class sleds (IMO). Every now and then you stumble across a done-up Viper lurking by some lake or where folks are playing around drag racing and mop up everything except the exotic modded sleds.

I'll do my research, run it stock this year; (although I just stumbled across a set of used triple pipes....tempting).

Again, this is not my primary sled, just a toy to go out and buzz the valley and do a local loop when I want to ride something different. This one is so nice I don't want to hack it up and my goal is to make and keep it as pristine as possible.

Been searching for a couple years and just can't seem to find any used Viper/SRX's that were professionally built. Would like a big-bore that was build right. I've found Vipers with triple pipes but they were not well taken care of, stored outside in the weeds in the summer, etc, or some kid that beat the crap out of it. This one is nice so I'll likely keep it stock and keep searching for the ultimate....

Congrats on coming back to the triple club! But comming from a Srx your either gonna have to spend some big $$ to get the same performance (but still lose on fuel economy)

I've had tons of different Yamaha triples and the Srx is the only one with slight mods make me happy!

My advice is to keep your eye open for a clean Srx! You will know what I'm saying after you ride the viper! And just small bolt on mods for the vipe!

Mods I had on mine that I recommend are:
Srx motor mount, clutching, Srx base gasket, opticool head gasket, Srx rear heat exchanger, ohlins all around, 1.25 ripsaw, bender 4x4 pipe and vforce 3 reeds

youll know if the shocks were upgraded, it will be REALLY stiff (think sno pro package on a cat) if it hasnt been. still pretty firm even if it has. best bet (if you want a smoother ride and dont mind a set of extra holes) is a mono skid. getting less spendy and an easy swap. I dont think the vforce is really worth it on these sleds. honestly, they run pretty good stock, and the clutch setup I have in my signature works great without being harsh or really losing anything anywhere. any pics of the sled?

Thanks for the recent tips 03viperguy and ViperGYTR.

I'll likely do your clutch recommendations and keep it relatively stock this year. My primary ride is a 2016 Switchback 800 S so the Viper is a spare for the Maine trip and a few short rides just for something different and fulfill my need to hear the sound of a triple.

I won a set of VForce reeds (any make/model) from a raffle, and my KTM and new sled already have Vforce so I'll likely turn in my Vforce raffle ticket for reeds for the Viper. I do not know if they make the new Vforce3R's or not for the older triple. I figure since stock reeds are 14 years old new reeds wouldn't hurt and I just won't expect any real enhancement from them.

Suspension we'll see. Bummer, a few years back I get go a spare SC4/5 skid with my 800 Rev and seem where folks have retro-fitted them in this sled. I'll keep an eye out for a mono shock setup.

Thanks!

When you in Maine warrior? You're welcome to come check out my viper. Piped/ported, boss seat, apex bars, caddy black Diamond paint, 136 mono, clutched, etc etc blah blah. Anyways welcome to check it out and try it and any of the others in the stable out. Hell, I'll let you try the 240ish hp turbo viper if you want
