Any problems with permanently removing battery from 500 XTC System

Is there any problems with permanently removing battery from 500 XTC System. The sled does not get ridden that much and at about $90.00 per battery and a 2 year life expectancy it just doesn't seem worth it to keep it in use. I was concerned that the system may use the battery smooth out the DC or have some other bad effect if it was removed long term.
 
You are correct, the battery is used as the smoothing condenser. Best bet would be to find some from a non estart and hook them up. The sled should have the hook ups prewired. Just not sure where they would be on that sled.
 
I removed the battery from my enduro motorcycle years ago and made a homemade battery eliminator by soldering three capacitors together and mounting them inside a small project box. You can buy a universal eliminator or get one off of a batteryless sled easy enough. The other option is to just leave the dead battery in there to be your voltage smoother?

PS: you can get these batteries cheaper than $90 but like you said they just don't last. The original one in my wife's sled went 11 seasons, I'm lucky to get 3 out of the replacements. :cry: She likes her electric start too much so I keep buying batteries....

Thanks for the info. If I can pick up a battery for $45 to $65 I may consider leaving it in service. What size capacitor would I need. I assume that I could just hook it across the battery terminals.

This is what you need,

I'm pretty sure they mount up behind the dash, the plug should be there.
 
I pulled the electric start out of my 02 last winter. I got a good copy of the original PDF instructions because I was worried about needing to put a smoothing condenser in. The only plug into the harness was the 3 wire plug for ground/start/charge. Whoever put in the e-start omitted the fuse box. There are capacitors by the left dash but the instructions made no mention of them. By the looks of the instructions the sled was designed to add e-start with a minimal of components.
 
I have an 00 and 01. Single and dual bulb. On the 00 there is one mounted on the hood by the tach. On the 01 there are 2 down by your left knee

It appears that the smoothing condenser is not an add/remove part with electric start, at least with the triples.

To the OP reference the table for the parts that came with the kit for you sled and just make sure you have them all accounted for when your done.

When adding electric start to a stock non-e start sled (as those are directions for) the condensers are already there from factory and do not need to be removed. If the sled came stock with e start then the condensers are not there and need to be added. The harness will have plugs for them somewhere depending on your sled. It does not matter if its a twin, tripple, or the old or new ignition. Your mountain max never came stock with e start, it was added on by a previous owner. So you already had the condensers on that sled stock. Now where are they on a MM? Not sure but they are there. Any factory e start sled needs the battery for a smoothing condenser or you will have problems with the electrical stuff as guages, lights, ect....
