I have a 2001 SXR-700 with electric start and reverse. It's my son's sled and need to wire a 12v cig lighter socket somewhere to plug in face shield and charge phone and possibly jump the sled. So I have a weatherproof socket, 14ga wire, and 10ft of wire shield, but now cannot decide where to locate the socket. Up on the dash requires long wiring and under the engine to get to the battery terminals for hookup. I'm pretty solid on hooking it up to the battery. I'd like a clean dash location but open to other ideas that have worked for others as to where to locate the 12v cig lighter socket?

Thanks!

I'd mount it on the left side.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure where on the left side you are suggesting. The panel on the left side of a 2001 SXR-700 has 2 pots/controls for the heated grips & throttle. So that spot is not available at least on the 2001 SXR. Looking for any spot that worked well for others in the past.

Thanks!/con

I re-read your initial post and now realize you don't have a heated shield plug-in yet. I ran my plug in up under the handle bar pad. It's zip-stripped to the bar.
Just trying to help you spit ball.

Thanks, Yeah, I might have to go with a zip strip location. The 12v receptacle I have is a panel mount so was hoping for a solution. My initial thought was to mount it on one of the bumps on either side of the speedo or tac. I just don't want to run wire all the way back from the hood, front of sled, back to battery. Either I have to go next to the exhaust bend, or under the front of the motor. Not liking that option so much as I keep looking at it. My son is using a moto style helmet with goggles but I think he's going to want to go heated shield eventually and be able to charge his phone. I may wait until next summer to carefully work this install unless a miracle idea pops up heehee.

Mine was mounted on bump to the right of tach looks nice w rubber cap. I do here ya on the wire routing.

How about tapping into the 12v line back at the trunk. Hard mounting the cigarette lighter so it is accessible from the trunk????

That's a possibility(Thanks), although I may just wait for the warm weather and go the dash route after all. We may install a phone holder & charging on the bars. I'd like to keep heavy gauge wires to allow for socket to socket jump/charging. That's mostly for my 15 Viper which already has a OEM 12v cig socket and no pull start. If that sled battery goes dead I'm screwed. I have a cig to cig charge cable that will save me. It's light weight and easy to haul.

I'll post pics if I get to the install. I may rig up the 12v socket as a jump socket with tie wraps inside the cowel just for now.

Thanks all for the ideas.
