Chain case bearing installation

Hey everyone. Changing the track on my wife's 2000 SXR700. Pulled the chain case and noticed the bearing seal. Both top and bottom bearings the bearing seal faces the oil and the back side has no seal in the bearing. Shouldn't the open side of the bearing be in the oil? Here are some pics of the bearings installed. If someone has a manual can you please confirm that these are installed correctly.. Thanks!

Open side should go out, there is a lot of junk that floats around in a chain case that you don't want in your bearings.

awesome. thanks for the reply. They are in good shape. I will pack them with grease before reassembly.

I would not put grease in those bearings. They are meant to be lubed from chain case oil. Seal allows just enough oil in to keep them lubed. Grease in bearing will prevent this.

yup seal acts as a filter and lets the oil through but keeps the crud out. the lip seal on the drive axle keeps all the oil in the chain case.

Grease will not effect the bearing, they are greased when new so adding it will not be an issue.

The grease that comes with them new is a light lithium grease. It's meant to keep the bearing alive as the oil works it way in to displace it. I wouldn't pack it with anything, maybe just wet them up real good with your chosen chain case oil or something sticky like assembly lube just to keep them happy until the oil gets back in there.
