any installed reverse on their sxr700?...how difficult and expensive was it?
Its fairly easy to do.. as far as expensive.. not sure if Yamaha even offers the aftermarket kit any longer but I am sure some of the guys that are parting out sleds would be able to give you a good deal for couple hundred.

Your only source for a reverse now is going to be eBay. a descent reverse chain case isn't all that expensive but you need to get all the linkages with it as well. There are a lot of extra parts that go with one to make it all work.

I installed reverse & electric start on our (my son's) 2001 SXR-700 and it wasn't too bad. I found a kit from BOP I believe. It's a good opportunity to take the chaincase apart and check everything out.
You'll need,
- Chaincase cover, gears, chain, shaft, shift fork, reverse drive gear shaft retainer bolts
- Shifter & Linkage (bolts on) & bolts (3)
- Beeper if interested
- Template for cutting out dash/shroud opening for shifter lever
For all the parts kit used you are probably looking at $3-400. I found new kits listed but crazy prices and not available for some I checked. The kit I bought had all the main parts (greasy & a few bolts missing) and the reverse shift mechanism was all set up so it was plug & play. I cut the shift lever opening in the dash using a template from the instructions I found on line. Search for the instructions they are good and will get you all the way through it. Oh, I did not get a beeper, but found one on ebay and added that to the existing harness connection, works great.
We tried it out a couple weeks ago (in some snow that came & went) and it worked great. No more broken back pulling it all the way off the trailer. Electric start was a great add on too.

Rebmo. One question. How much torque on the bolt holding the bottom double gears in the chain case ? I'm in the process of changing a track on my sons 2002 vmax and when removed it was not all that tight. Any help is greatly appreciated
