I am rebuilding a Venture from the bottom up. All of the bearings are good and free, but the crank will not spin nice and free like others that I have rebuilt have. It is binding and as far as I can tell it is the main seal on the oil pump side. It fits really tight and I think it is causing friction. It is the right seal. Do I have to worry about the seal burning and creating a leak if I leave it, or is there something else I missed?

Your crank should have 2 little pins make sure that they are in the right grooves as that will make the crank bind up and cause this problem.

I have the crank setting in one of the case halves, the cases are currently not together, and it still turns tight. I can feel the resistance is coming from the seals, I am more worried that the seals will burn and cause an air leak. Has this ever been known to happen? All the pins are setting in the correct spot.

Do you still have the old seals? If so compare the new ones with the old ones. It's possible you've got the wrong seals.
I don't know if they will burn and cause a air leak.

The aftermarket seals seem to fit really tight.

new winderosa crank seals tend to be tighter than oem yamaha and give more resistance ....make sure you grease the seals ...never put them in dry .....make sure all alignment pins are set in their positions .....if it is not the seals and pins are in place tightness can be caused from a wobbly crank that has too much deflection
