It's the speedo connector....pressed into the driveshaft. Does the square end go in first or does the round end? A thought....if the square end sticks out of the driveshaft, you could use a wrench to turn it and pull it out if need be. The connector that came out was square end in first and it was flush with the end of the driveshaft.

I've cut a couple out of old broken shafts thinking I could salvage them as spare but either cut too deep into the shaft or ruined them another way.If I remember right the square end goes in first and is pressed in flush with the end of the shaft,but unfortunately I'm not 100% positive on that.That insert is tapered is it not?If so then the narrow end would go in first.
