Picked up a cream puff 98 XT 600 Twin. original 2900 miles with E/S, Reverse, Saddle Bags, Tank Bag, brand new cover still in the box, and the wheel kit for the skis.
I need some input on the sled. I've heard it doesn't ride very well. 2nd year (I think) on the ProAction Chassis. Has the 11" rear suspension. Any adjustments to make it ride better if truly not that good ?
Clutching good ? Should I go with a Comet 108C or a different secondary like a TEAM ?
Engine ? Yamaha has long been known for dependability. Little 600 twin OK ? Gas hog ? Oil guzzler ?
Looking for input.
Thanks

Welcome !!
Here's some good reading.

The only difference between yours and his is yours does not have rebuildable shocks.

I have a 97 sx 600. The xt rides better than the sx but the xtc rides better than the xt different suspension a setups. Twin 600 is strong but not as strong as the triple redhed. Only problem was the 97 had ring spin problem that was fixed on the 98 so no problems. Gas hog yes and no its not to bad on gas but the triple was better on gas same with oil consumption.
Clutching there are some good setups in the tech section and a few easy to do mods as well I like the Yamaha clutch.
You can remove a layer of the head gasket and do the reed stopper notch or reed spacers. The reed spacers or stopper notch really cleans up low end bog and throttle response. Also increases gas mileage.
I really recommend the spacers or notch. The stopper notch has step by step instructions in the tech section.

Also I am running the same setup in my sled this year as super1c is in his ditch banger project and what a difference it made just testing it across the field in the little snow we got a few weeks ago. Love it

turk set up for 600 twins. A 50/44 helix (micro belmont) green secondary spring at 60deg, and 8AB weights with 2.4g rivets in all holes.

I wish I'd experienced the twins in the pro action chassis.
I've only driven two 600 triples, two 700 triples, two 700 srxs.
Triples are all I know as fare as pro action chassis. Pitty really.

Thanks guys. Greatly appreciate the info. Sounds like some notched reeds are in my future. Can you buy them notched, or are they a do it yourself thing ? If they don't make a difference then I will go for some clutch upgrades. Maybe do the clutches first. Most likely cheaper than new reeds.
Brother in law is looking at an 01 SXR 600 tomorrow. Triple pipes and clutch work on it with 4300 miles. Will start another thread. Please respond if you have info on that ride.
Thanks again

It's a do it yourself thing. It's in the tech section. Or just do reed spacers you can buy them and it will make a difference both performance and fuel economy.
You can never go wrong with clutching.
You don't cut the reed you cut the stopper.

Read the links within this link.

Do the notch before fine tuning the clutch.

I have two brand new stainless steel stoppers w/ a notch in them. Never used them as they did not fit on my 96 reed cages. PM me if interested.
Sh!t.... For that fact I have new Carbon Tech reeds too.
