I took apart the chaincase from a 94 vmax 600 a few weeks ago, I can't figure out the bottom gear. Is there supposed to be a spacer in front and in back of the lower gear? I've got two spacers here, one is thicker than the other. And is there supposed to be play in that bottom gear? This one has about 4mm of play.

the 11mm thick collar goes on the upper gear and the 7mm collar for the lower. the lower gear will move a bit in and out. using a straight edge across the chaincase will insure you have proper alignment on the chain and gear set.

Ive got the thin washer behind the gear with the 7mm spacer on the outside of the lower gear, with a straight edge the upper and lower gears line up

thin collar behind the lower gear. lower gear should have a shoulder on one side, distinctly more pronounced than the other side. this shoulder should be to the bulkhead side of the chaincase as well as the collar. usually a gear with the tooth count stamped will display the stamping to the outboard side so you can see it when assembled. thicker collar behind upper gear, or between it and the bulkhead side of the chaincase. the 94 should have two piece jackshaft and there can be movement on it as well perhaps skewing your alignment. that upper shaft, without the case cover on can move in and out considerably.
