What is the longest free length a spring can have and still be used with a short cover?

The tallest factory spring is 85.4mm. Wire diameter plays the biggest part as coil bind is the limiting factor on the O/A length of the spring. For example some of the tall cover spring are shorter O/A length than the longest short cover. IDK what you are trying to accomplish....................SRXtreme

I am tuning and old Phazer. For one test run I used a long cap spring in error. An orange-pink-orange 6.0mm diameter with a length of 82.6 mm. It seemed to function mechanically just not the right tune. I have a Yamaha clutch tuning chart. I am looking for some kind of bench mark " a spring with a max length of X with a diameter of Y will work in a short cap" . I am trying to use what I have in the shop. Thanks

IDK if you have this but typically these are the only springs to be used with a short cover. Like I mentioned b4 the tall cover springs will coil bind.....SRXtreme http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/aaTECH/drivespecs/primary_springs.htm
