Hey guys, just want to see what words of advise or wisdom you have about an ss440 i'm thinking about picking up this week.
I can get it for $600 with a lot of spare parts including new skis/suspension too. The engine in it is garbage but comes with a complete rebuilt 440 and another engine in parts with a 540 top end.
seat and body look decent for its age, not looking for perfection anyway. Going to be my backup mod sled. get the 440 in it and general matenece done right away then this summer stretch it out to a 136 or so. shouldn't be hard since the drivers are already 2.52. probably build the 540 to drop in at some point if possible as well.
If i do need parts are they fairly easy to find? Don't want to end up like my buddy searching forever for parts for his 340 free air tx haha.

There is a guy here that did a build of one of those a while back. I'll see if I can get him to chime in. At $600, that may be a deal in Canada but in the states thats a $100-200 sled if that, even with the extra parts. To put things in perspective, I sold an 86 Phazer last week for $425. It was in decent (7 or 8 out of 10) condition. It was a very good running, driving sled and needed nothing to be trail worthy.

i just read his build to get an idea what i want to do!
Here a running 80 exciter or enticer goes for $1000 to $1500. cant buy a running sled for under $1000 here at all it seems. I could sell this rebuilt and double my money if i chose to but want to hang onto this one.

Hi, nice sled . I am helping my friends son's 81 SS 440 I have tons of parts but there from 87 and up. Just wondering if some parts will fit on that motor like 87carb and Boyeson double stage reeds would fit his intake?

I have had 2 of theses 82 440's for over 25 years.
I went through both of them fairly extensively in the last few years. Getting the parts I needed wasn't a problem at all.
That $600 price seems a bit steep to me...
PS: I like the looks of that extra tall smoked windshield, we ran the stock short ones for too many cold winters!

Thanks for the input. As long i can get parts when needed im a happy man. From what ive found out i should be able to just assemble it all and good to go . I know all the gas lines and and other rubber will need replaced as well as the bearings addressed. Thinking i wont have to throw a lot more money at it.
Im going to pull the wind shield off i think. Its in good shape and dont want to mess that up.
I figured that price was going to seem high to everyone but $200 just aren't out here any more, or its some obscure sled impossible to find parts for if it is.
Hoping itll be a solid platform to build off of.
