Hello new to the forum and to snowmobile repair.......thx guys for having me.
I hope somewhere here can give me some help ..
2 questions , first question is I just purchased an older sled (1985 phazer electric start)
purchased from a neighbor where it sat for about 3yrs got it in the garage and replaced gas and plugs checked compression about 120-125 in both cylinders but found that I have no spark and the light does not glimmer when I pull it over like or vmax does, so my question is before tearing into things and swapping out components is there a common problem on these sleds I'm thinking stator??? and do I need to pull the engine to replace it?

Second question is how the heck do I remove the starter from the machine :o|...I can't even see it ???
I figure its under the engine and figure it has 2 bolts like a car does but I can't even see it or the wiring from the solenoid ?? I see it runs under the engine but do you remove the engine to replace the starter ???

I hope these aren't to stupid of questions . thx

Welcome to the site.
Try unplugging your ignition switch. And also test your coils and check your plug caps. But could be stator or cdi box.
Not any common problems that I know of. Not positive but I think you have to remove the engine to get at the starter.

Just had the same issue on a 92 Phazer. Locate the wires coming from the carb near the idle adjustment thumb screw. Follow the leads to where it connects to the main harness. Disconnect the wires from the harness and tuck the wires coming from the carb safely out of harms way. Now take the two plugs on the harness and plug them together. Check for spark, ride, enjoy.

ok thx Yamahamark and throttle junkie35, I am going to try the ignition switch thing first , and then I will try wires as suggested by junkie .. just wondering junkie is that the tors thing that I have heard about??
I will you guys know tomorrow what the results are ..
thx again for the response guys.

ok went out to the garage after I got home form work ...
disconnected the ignition switch no spark ..
disconnected the tors sensor/switch from stator and looped 2 wires to sensor back to stator bypassing sensor and spark is now there ...YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME :)
didn't get chance to fire it up 11pm both kids and the wife are sleeping will try in the morning ...
thanks again throttle junkie and Yamahamark.

ok tried to start it this morning no go ... looks like i'm pulling the carbs .. also is there anyway to lift the motor enough without disconnecting everything to replace the starter?
wondering if i use the engine hoist to just lift it enough to sneak out the starter ? And if i do have to pull the starter is there anything i should know or be aware of??

ths again guys

You should be able to get it up enough to pull the starter. If your starter isn't working I would check the fuse first.
If it still won't start after cleaning the carbs try pouring a little premix down the boost bottle ports to prime it.

thanks Yamahamark and throttle junkie .. got the starter in , took carbs out and cleaned as the sled has been sitting for a few years , tried starting and nothing ....:o| so I found very little to no fuel , poured the chainsaw gas in ports in the carb boots and started up ran until fuel burned off.. so my question is how common is it for fuel pumps to fail ?? I'm going to check the lines first and filter but my next thing I would suspect is fuel pump failure. is there anything else common I should check before replacing pump .

thanks again guys .

Pump failure not that common but it is like 30 years old. Check fuel lines and vacuum line for cracks and check the filter and line in the tank. Sitting for 3 years the line might not be good or filter might not be on the line.

ok put the new fuel pump in today although the fuel will not be delivered to the carbs ? I removed the fuel line going to the tank and put vacuum to and it seems to draw fuel no problem so figure there are no clogs ... checked the line that is going to the fuel tank from the pump and it seems to be pushing pressure which doesn't make sense? you would think there would be vacuum to draw the fuel .. any idea guys or a little education for me . the pump is new was a universal one purchased from royal distributing .

thanks guys

Ok thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions .
I rebuilt the old fuel pump and primed it started second try set the carbs up running good can't believe how nice it runs and performs .
I woukd like to thank everybody for there help.
