Hey everyone this is my first post but got a lot of help from here before I have a issue with my primary clutch on a 2002 viper when slowing down or downshifting the belt makes a little jump or hop on the clutch and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas... To see what I'm talking about there is a video on YouTube of someone with the same problem on a redhead.. Just look for "Problem with Yamaha primary clutch" and you will see my problem as well thanks

Nope and now there's been 2 new belts put on to see if that was the problem but still the same

Can you actually feel this when riding or just seeing it on the stand

Looks to me in the video the primary is just disengaging before the secondary is all the way down shifted. I don't think that is a problem. Is it stock clutching? What is the secondary spring and the wrap on it? Could need a new secondary spring.

Mine is a little different mine make more of a hop then this one but it is the closest I can show you. And yes I took it for a ride and lifted the hood and had the guard off and it does it then to but to me there is no loss of performance that I can tell anyways and I can't feel it but I am on and off the throttle a lot do to ditch ridding a lot so it would be hard to notice...

Have you tried cleaning the clutches something could be sticking.

If there was a problem you would feel it. If it wasn't back shifting properly you would notice it more being on and off the gas. As yamahamark said you can clean the clutches. If you take the cover off the primary you can slide the sheave in and sometimes belt dust and stuff builds up where the bushing rests on the shaft. You can clean the shaft and if it is sticking a little it might help. My personal opinion is it is probably fine as the belt jump you are referring to is because the belt is still down in the secondary a little when the primary is disengaging and causes slack in the belt.

I also just think it's the way it's disengaging. That's why I asked if you can actually feel it. As the others said I'd clean and inspect your clutches, check alignment and center to center and ride
