Hey guys, haven't been on here in forever, but I found myself with a yard full of yamahas for some reason.
Anyway, I've got a question !!
I have an 89 ovation (elect.start) and it has a bad stator. I have an 86 phazer (485) and an 8? Xlv (540) laying around and I know the stators are good. The question is, are either of these stators interchangeable with the ovation??
I've looked up part #s till I was blue in the face. Part #s are all over the place . Take a phazer, from one year to a different, they have different #, an elect start model has a different # , but then I found that the xlv that i have (540 w/es) has the same part # fir the stator that my 86 phazer has (485 w/o es)
so does anyone know if i could swap out a stator from either the xlv or phazer to the ovation???
Thanks!

According to parts online search this is the part # for the stator assembly in your sled and others that used the same part #.
Assemblies where 85L-85560-00-00 is used
1989 OVATION (CS340N) - Generator
1989 OVATION DELUXE (ELEC START) (CS340EN) - Generator
1990 OVATION (CS340P) - Generator
1990 OVATION LE (ELEC START) (CS340EP) - Generator
1992 ENTICER II LT (ET410TRS) - Generator
1992 OVATION LE (CS340ES) - Generator
1993 ENTICER II LT (ET410TRT) - Generator

Can anyone tell me the specs on testing the stator? I have a multimeter, just don't have service manual.

Hi dooinVT
The resistance on the Phazer source coil should be about 1290 ohms plus/minus 10% according o the Yamaha manual. Don't have a manual for the Ovation but it's probably the same.
The pickup coil is 17 ohms plus/minus 10%.
I've raided parts from a phazer for an enticer before and I'd think if you had the 2 stators side by side the only difference MIGHT be the plug or plugs on the end.
I'm sending you a PM with my phone number, call me Friday and we can discuss this.
The area code will look familiar to you.

Thanks a bunch! I kept testing the stator, swear its good (without exact values) ... Then I robbed the CDI's off a phazer (86) and an XLV (8?) tested the wires (corresponding to the colors on the stator) they all gave readings, EXCEPT the one from the ovation.
I just stuck the cdi from the ovation in the oven,(to evaporate moisture) and NOW it is also giving readings. I'm guessing its the cdi!
I also clipped the plug wires, AND added an extra ground to the coil from the engine/chassis, Plus bypassed the TORS, Gotta put it all back together tomorrow. see what happens.....
If not, I'll give you a call! Thanks again!

Maybe you're getting there
As I think about it the stators are the same physical dimensions but the coils on the stator are 180 out from the phazer to the ovation/enticer due to where the wires exit the engine. It doesn't really matter though because both cylinders fire every 180 degrees, so it will still work if for example the phazer stator is bolted in 180 out so the wires go out the hole in the Ovation crankcase . Might be tough to understand what I'm trying to say here but this is based on having done this before and had it work like a charm.

I should mention that the 1290 ohm resistance is from a 1985 Yamaha shop manual for the phazer.
Thee are phazer stators out there with source coils that read about 550 ohms that work just fine. I think I remember them as being for SRV's but in taking apart/working on original phazers I've found these readings on their stators too.
A resistance reading of either zero or infinity definitely means it's bad.

wire colors
can you tell me what wire colors coming from the stator are which wires with which values? i am working on a 1992 ovation . Thanks

One of my sleds are a ( 1990 ) CS-340 ( same as Ovation 340 )I have an ( 1989 ) Ovation 340 cc (elect.start) and it has a bad stator.
I have an ( 1986 ) Phazer 485 cc and an ( 198? ) XLV 540 cc laying around and I know the stators are good.
The question is, are either of these stators interchangeable with the Ovation ?
Does anyone know if I could swap out a stator from either the XLV or Phazer to the Ovation ?
A couple of years ago the stator went bad and I just took a stator from an ET-340 ( Gen-2 ) and it working flawless since then.
