So I purchased a 1998 SX 700 Tripple last year. It ran for a few weeks then stopped running. It starts, but won't run. If I give it gas, when the clutch should engage it nudges like it wants to go forward then just starts smoking. I decided to give it a go getting her running recently (why I didn't do it when it was warm out is another question). Needless to say, I am a novice (and that is stretching it). So to start out I cleaned the carbs, changed the plugs/fluids, etc. After doing so, remarkably (to me at least) it started but the problem persists. In checking the sled out I noticed issue #2 (although maybe they are related) the pipe coming out of one of the cylinders was not hot like the others. I notice the ignitiion coil wire appeared to be crimped and perhaps no good. I ordered another on e-bay, installed it and presto... no change.
So needless to say I am at a crossroads. I would love to get it running but taking to the dealer will likely cost more than I spent for the sled. Could the problem with the cylinder be something prior to the coil or is it more likely the cylinder is blown? Is this problem related to the sled not runnning only smoking in the clutch area (perhaps not getting enough power) or am I likely looking at 2 spearate issues?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Give your clutches a good cleaning.
What is your compression?

list of things to check:
1.) compression guage on all 3 cylinders, pull the same number of times on each one, record numbers
2.) move the spark plug wire to another cylinder and try and run it, did the non hot cylinder now move to anther cylinder or same cylinder not firing?
3.) try it with 3 brand new spark plugs
report back your findings
(you can criss cross the wires and it will still run fine, that's what I mean about moving the spark plug wire to another cylinder)

I just posted a new thread about this as well. I've 120 in the center and mag and 124 in the pto for compression. New BR9ES plugs. Switched the wires around and the "no spark" coil and wire jump as I am moving them. Even changed my flywheel. This is weird cause all three coils plug into the same two orange and black wires coming from the CDI box. What the heck could it be????? I'm chasing a no spark problem that I can't catch.

is that centre plug wet when you remove it? it will not fire when it is wet/fouled
