phazer 500 could it be the fan belt

Sled runs great drives great.
But when its stopped and idling there is a squealing from the right hand side. Sounds like it is coming from the fan.
Sled does not creep when idling so I don't think it is the drive belt.

Does this sound like a fan belt? Can I tighten a tension-er?
This is my first fan-ner sled.
 
Perfect. I have ordered one from the local dealer.
I'll put it in this Saturday, then start hoping for more snow to cover all that melted in the rain today.
 
I had one go bad on a high mileage Phazer. I do not read of it happening here though.
 
not personally but while it is apart for the belt i like checking them as it will only cost riding time later if they fail.
 
I haven't taken it apart yet, but the more i listen it sounds more like bearings than belt.
The new belt has not arrived yet so I think i will order bearings as well.
 
You adjust the belt tension by moving shims from one side of the outer pulley to the other (basically separating or closing the 2 sheaves). These belts last a long time, but if it is squealing it might be glazed and time to replace it.

And the bearings are easy to replace.
 
Ok I have the parts.
I pulled the old belt off, it is soft feeling and shinny, so I think it's time.
I spun the fan and the bearings are a little grinds but I expect there is life left in them too.
Since I have all the parts I will make it all new.
How do I get those bearings out?

There should be 2 - 6203 bearings with a snap ring and a washer between them. If I am replacing them, I just drive them out with a punch - one each way. Just slide the punch in at an angle and catch the 2nd bearing (inner race). It will destroy the bearings but you are replacing anyway. Make sure you have a couple 6203 bearings first though. Be careful how you brace the part, you don't want to break it.
 
Thanks. 5 shims between the shelves, none on the outside. This sled is new to us. I expect it had never been adjusted.

Bearings came out easy, as you described.

Looks like the original bearings only had outside grease seals the new bearings (from yamaha dealer) are sealed both sides. Old bearings were dry, no grease left.
 
Yep, I have seen them dry before. Can't remember on the seals, but with no way to grease them I would leave the seals on (unless the washer contacts them which it shouldn't).
