Need some help here guys. My 98 XT has a bad stumble at speeds 20-30 mph. I have to run 1/2 to 3/4 throttle to get it to go. Once it hits 40 mph it runs well and the torque / power is instant. It is drinking gas like like a wine-o swills wine at trail speeds. 60 Miles yesterday used more than 3/4 of a tank. Should get around 100 miles to a tank.
Absolutely no torque at the 20-30 speed. Sounds "gurgley" Not 1 cylinder-like, but like it is loading up bad on 1. Pulled the plugs and the PTO side is brown around the electrode. The mag side is black. Sled has the notched reed update, but am getting a second set to try just in case.
Carb issue ? Clutching issue ? Weak coil ? Would a clutch kit help ?

Did you swap plugs. I would suspect its a carb issue loading upon the low end.
Yes. When I filled up, I put 2 new plugs in. Ran the 60 or so miles back and the same issue. Pulled the plugs after loading on the truck. However, this time both were brown and looked great. Still had the same stumble at trail speed 20-30 mph and used right at 3/4 tank of gas.

Sorry for the typos. I hate auto correct sometimes.
Yup. First thing I had done when I bought the sled. They were cleaned by a retired Cat Master Technician. Your SX ever have this issue ? Run either 91 or 93 Octane in the sled with a dash of marine grade Sta-Bil in each tank. Maybe as simple as putting on a new belt ? Will try that, then maybe Turks clutch kit unless someone has had this issue and has an answer.
Thanks !

I also had this problem it sounds weird but are you running the Yamaha belt?
When I run the Yamaha belt on mine I have this problem when I put on my ultimax pro belt the problem goes away.
I had another 97 with turks setup and it rocked!! But sold it to a guy who wanted it more than I did. I didn't even have the sled for. And I never had a problem with that sled.
As for gas mileage you can drop a jet size but it don't get much better just carry a gas can

Yup, Yamaha belt. Will try an after market belt. Turks set-up "rocked". How-so ? What can you tell me about it. Engagement RPM, top speed better, more torque, or just get there (top speed) faster ?
Can you get 100 miles to a tank when riding ? Rode with a 96 Phazer and an RX1-ton Friday. Phazer burned between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank where mine burned 3/4+ a tank riding same trails, same speeds. I know the phazer is a 485 compared to my 600, but something is wrong. RX1-ton used right at 1/4 tank prior to each fill up.
Thanks

Engagement will stay at 4k and should top at 8k mine did. It had more torque and was really snappy off the line. And yes you can get to top speed a little faster.
I get about 80 miles to a tank on mine. Just something about the 600 twins are hard on fuel. The triples are better on fuel.

Thanks Mark. My brother in law has the red head triple and he does get MUCH better mpg than I do. Just talked to a Yammie-guy who had a 95 v-max 500. Burned down the PTO side piston with less than 200 miles on the brand-new sled. Yamaha covered it, but he was told by the dealer that rebuilt it, that the sled jetting and clutching had to be changed during the rebuild. There was a bulletin that at trail speeds (20-40 mph) the PTO side would lean-out. He said once rebuilt, it never ran right, stumbled, drank gas, and he was so unhappy he traded it at the end of the season. Any bulletins on the 97 or 98 600's ? Anywhere I can read them ?
Thanks

Here's the only one I know of and its only for the 97. The 98's as far as I know did have any problems.
