I just bought a 1980 ss440 and have been trying to get it running, I cleaned the carb and got it to fire, it now will idle for a little and will have power and seem to run fine for like 30 sec. After that it will begin to die off. It will stay running if I give it throttle, but has no power and smokes alot. The clutches seem to engage properly when it is running right, it has new fuel lines from tank to carb, new fuel, and a new fuel filter. The choke is free and does not seem to make a difference if it is engaged or not. it also has good spark and compression. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi, I would check compression, pluse line, tors system if it's not bypassed, coil is grounded.

Welcome to the site nick123.
If the pulse line is good, pull the fuel line off of the carb and see how well it can flow into a container when you pull the rope or idle it.
I have had to rebuild both of my SS440 pumps over the years. One stopped pumping, one sprung a leak.
If you need one, Its a cheap kit on Ebay:

I do believe that the pulse line is good and I believe the pump is good. I can see the fuel moving through the line while it is running and it sucked it from the tank when the lines were dry. I also swapped the fuel pup with on the sled come with and it is acting the same.
It has good spark and compression, the pulse line seems to be working properly it seems to run perfectly fine until it starts to warm up after like 30sec to a min

is the pulse line split at the block? had this happen before.

pulse line is not split, and it seems to be working, i can see fuel moving through the lines to the carb

If moving the choke lever doesn't make a difference this leads me to think your'e running way to rich, float level too high? Choke plunger stuck? It would explain why it runs well until it starts to warm up.

does it have an air bubble that will not go away? could mean it is sucking air in through loose line on suction side of pump.

sounds like it needs and new needle and seat and the kehnin fuel pump may need a rebuild ...if the fuel drains back when you shut it off it is time for a rebuild
