Recently purchased a really rough 1979 340 and the crank is broke. I am currently looking for a replacement running motor. The question I have is,,can I use a 340 from any year and be able to just plug it in and go? Or do I have to get one from the same generation? I have seen some on line from 1985 etc. I`m wondering if the wiring is the same or at least easily adaptable? I`m planning on restoring this sled as a project, it belonged to a buddy I used to ride with approx. 20 years ago.

I know that 79-82 engines will be plug and play.

All the ET 340 long blocks should work including the Ovation. Keep your 79 stator as ignition changed a few times over the years. Oil pump cable may be different on the Ovation (not sure).
Basically a good 340 long block and use the rest off your 79 and you should be good.
