Need some advice. Sled ran good this winter and developed a slight head gasket leak so I decided to tear it down and check things out. Pulled the head and looks like all three cylinders are going to need re plating due to a few small chips of plating coming off at the top of one cylinder. This and the other two cylinders also have the cross hatching removed in a few spots due to wear. New pistons and rings also on the menu. I haven't taken the jugs off yet to check the crank but I believe it to still be good. The rest of the sled is in decent shape and I replaced all chain case and other drive bearings in the fall. Just not sure If its worth it to rebuild this old thing. Im hoping the crank is ok. Part it out or rebuild is the question.

I would rebuild it. If you like it and it does what you need why not freshen it up. I'm toying with putting rings in mine myself. If you are the kind of person who hangs onto things then it will reward you for it. I know of people who buy/sell sleds every year and never hang onto anything so I guess it all depends on you.
While the older trailing arm sleds of poo, doo and the cats were getting kind of dated by the early 00's I think the Yamaha sleds are timeless. If my mtn Max looked the way it does now from the factory I'd buy it again tomorrow. Hell I'd build it again tomorrow it was a fun project and I like the way it turned out and love the way it performs. It pulls your arm out of the sockets like no other 700 I've ridden, love what clutching and gearing do for you.

Lol mine pulls my arms out of my sockets harder than any of my friends much newer 800s and climbs and carves right with them.

My 700 SKS is a turd compared to the 700 red head. It's a fuel pig and the power curve is far from flat. I have not been impressed at all by the hype of the Liberty twins. You can't beat the torque of a triple.
