1996 VMAX xt 600 reverse play

I was just gifted a 96 VMAX 600 with reverse for my 15yo son to use. We are going through it for the season. It has about 4600mi on it and I know all previous owners, it has been babied.

Anyway I noticed considerable play in the reverse gear box. With belt removed I can roll secondary clutch forward/backwards about an inch without the chain or brake rotor moving. The movement is within the reverse gear box. How much is normal? Are their wear items or known faults/adjustments within that I should address?

Not sure if that means it's worn but I know a guy that had the same sled and it also had a bunch of play in the reverse, my friends ski doo safari has a bunch of play too.

Normal. The reverse runs off the fly wheel on the 96 not the chain case.
