Hi all.
I'm new to sledding and just wondering if this clutch operation looks normal.

Just put the clutch back together after replacing one roller on the primary and cleaning out some of the dust buildup. Was kinda worried about that fluttering noise after its comes back down to idle. Seems to snap right open using the spring and touches the silver inner shaft. There's a little bit of float on the secondary as well.

I won't say it's normal but my 96 600 xt does the same thing. I cleaned it with brands clean and specifically cleaned the"c" shaped plastic pieces the clutch rides in and out on. I even rubbed summer graphite on them. It got better, but still snaps a little

As long as when the clutch is off the machine that it freely moves in and out with no spring on the primary it pretty normal.

I think the snap back is when the weights disengage.
I think the snap back is when the weights disengage.
Along with the spring preload and RPM, it pops back open.

I would clean those clutches before you ride it. They look like it was sitting for a few years and while you can ride them clean your going to put all that aluminum oxide into the belt which isn't good either. A green scotch brite pad will make quick work of them, hose it off with brake cleaner when done.

I think the snap back is when the weights disengage.
It's acting like an ex drag sled I once had that had notched weights which would hang and then snap on engagement. If you operate the engine carefully with the belt off the sheaves should come together slowly in one continuous movement as you increase rpm. If you keep increasing rpm then it suddenly snaps its binding somewhere. It might not nessecarily be weights, rollers or sliders it could be the center bushing on the sliding sheave.
What you don't want to do is just hammer the throttle because they can snap together with enough force it cracks something then the clutch explodes.

Good points guys. I didn't see that it was doing it when it was engaging too. I had to change clutch bushings on my 96 600 at 2200 miles. I do not remember exactly what it was doing but I know the sled would not go very good. All I changed was the 2 bushings and it was good to go. From what I have read the twins are harder on clutch bushings than the triples. Not sure if that is true.

That's the first thing I thought of. Was there a a small divet on the clutch weights?It could have a warn spot in the weights too make them catch and hang or a flat spot on the rollers.

No I don't think so, but ill take them out and look again.

The rollers the weights touch are all brand new, got them from Yamaha for $50 a each after tax. & the plastic C shaped slider things the primary slides on back and forth looked new to me. The previous guy said he rebuilt the clutch after it left him stranded on the trail. Also if i had to change them out I would of had to separate the sheaves . I'm going to take the weights out and maybe take a high grit sand paper to the sliding surfaces and double check and clean everything.
