Sold all my fleet of skidoos including my much loved machz 800 lt and bought a 2004 viper mountain with electric start and reverse [ getting old lol] cleaned it up did basic maintenance inc strip clean and rejet carbs ran like a champ, took it for 2 short test rides all good, so yesterday all guests gone and 6 inches of fresh snow so took it for a brief blast up the trail and 5 km in slowed for a trail intersection and it made a horrible noise and locked up. Just got it towed home and can turn it over by hand on clutch but not on cord or starter, plugs all good colour no fouling and no metal particles so I guess my season is over already, what a bummer
 

Is it hard to turn by hand with the clutch? Just had the same issue with a 600 but no loud noise just slowed engine and shut off. Can spin clutch but has a hard spot. Still have to tear it down yet.
 
I was wondering the same thing as RB2. Does it turn easily by hand? Can you feel anything binding when turning it by hand?

I would check to see if the e-start gear engaged the ring gear because if that's what happened, you might be back in business quickly. I doubt it's the problem but it wouldn't hurt to check some of the easier to fix items before yanking the engine.

Hope it's something small.
 
oldiron, yes I checked that on trail, sorry to say its toast, and we just got a big dump of pow, talked to dealer and crate motor not available so will strip original down and rebuild in summer
 
Bummer! Too bad you can't rebuild it this year. Well, at least you'll have a rock solid engine once you get it done.
 
Strange it will turn over by hand on clutch but not pull cord. Investigate further! Might not be a big deal

I saw a friends arctic cat recoil starter explode and jam up the stator. Try the recoil first
