I just bought a 1994 Vmax 500 with 2500 miles on it and had it shipped to Austin Texas so I can do routine maintenance on it before I bring it to our cabin in northern MN. Can I get a list of must do maintenance before my trip? The carbs have already been cleaned and she starts right up. The guy I bought it from said it is snow ready but not sure what that means. I haven't worked on a sled since our 1972 yamaha's with all bogies so any help would be appreciated.

If interested pics are here http://s265.photobucket.com/user/brmurph/library/Misc/snowmobiles?sort=3&page=1. Feel free to comment on track and slide condition.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I should have probably mentioned that it has been sitting for a few years. I do have a couple more specific questions. I have not worked on a sled since my 1972 Yamaha's which where all bogie wheels (no slides) hence not familiar with slides at all. One of my slides has about a 1 inch chunk missing, do I need to replace that ASAP or will it be OK for a few hundred miles? Here is a pic (its behind the 3rd track nub from the right) http://s265.photobucket.com/user/br...61230_142456_zpsje5kfmn9.jpg.html?sort=3&o=14

Also I have a bent/broken plastic ski http://s265.photobucket.com/user/br...61230_142408_zpsqq4hluib.jpg.html?sort=3&o=17 , it is actually ripped in the front where the metal hits the plastic. Can some one explain to me is this an actual plastic ski or is this what they call a ski skin? What should I replace it with?

Thanks in advance.

You should replace the slides, that one looks pretty bad. Do you know when the carbs were cleaned? If they were cleaned within the last few months you should be fine, otherwise I'd go through them again. This is what I do to my sleds every fall before the season starts. Clean carbs, change chain case oil and adjust chain tension, grease everything on the sled that needs to be greased, clean clutches, replace any idler wheels or bearings that need to be replaced and give the machine a good cleaning, armor the plastic and wax all painted surfaces. There is a fuel filter inside the tank, you might want to replace that too if it hasn't been replaced recently.
