I'm looking at two different Phazers. One is an '88 and the other a '92. Both of the seller said that all they need for electric start is a battery. I know almost nothing about sleds. Looking to purchase for an ice fishing machine and not interested in any of the newer performance sleds.

What is the question? The sleds apparently have electric start, but the battery on each is missing or bad. If you are wondering what battery to use, a place that sells batteries should have a listing.
You should be able to start them with the pull rope to try them.

I guess the question is, are all the old Phazers set up for electric start and to make that happen you just need to add a battery?

Nope. Only designated models have electric start. It takes alot to change a manual Phazer to electric start. Ignition switch, e-start wiring harness, battery tray, soleniod, rectifier, Flywheel, starter motor...I think thats it. I never understood why a Phazer would need elect. start?? They are probably the most reliable, easy starting sleds ever built.

Models that are equipped for electric start might have a LE designation, or at least should have a battery tray front left side, and starter motor below the exhaust manifold. If not I would not go to the trouble and or expense of installing one.
I have 3 Phazer/ Venture sleds and a couple of parts chassis, they all have assorted parts in some combination. If you don't have experience with these sled make sure they are in good running condition before signing the check. I'd do a compression check at the minimum. The carbs on these machines are a nightmare to service.
