Hey guys. So doing some research it looks like all the parts from the 2000-2002 SRX cranks are discontinued as well as all viper crank parts... However...Looking at the Yamaha parts fiche, the 98-99 cranks still have almost all the parts available. Can any shed some light on this? I am sourcing a crank right now for the viper and I'm thinking a 98-99 crank will be my best bet. I have two core viper cranks so I can update the outer bearings. Then weld the pins and get it trued. As far as I know...I'll have a crank that's just as good as the later ones and will still be able to get parts for it in the future. Good plan? Just to confirm 98-99 will drop in to my viper case right? It's funny because I can get a 98-99 unit for 200$ and the 2000-2002 units are 350+ AND...I can still get Yamaha parts for the older unit. Am i Missing something? Haha anyway that's my plan.

Yamaha always had the 98-99 crank in parts on the fiche, the 2000-02 they just show the whole assembly. The 98-99 parts interchange with the 2000-02, the end stub off a 99 same as 2000-02, but the 98 stub will interchange and the bearing will work off a 2000-02 as the races will align to the rollers. I would not rely on the fact that the parts will be available for a long time, many items are already be deleted as these sleds get older. They will not carry parts, especially crank parts and bearings forever. I would get a good crank in the sled and get it back up and running ,then if your gonna keep it forever, buy a spare wrap it up in a bag well oiled and put it on a shelf.

Yamaha is much the same as car dealers, they don't keep parts for outdated machines, usually only 10 years parts supply , then it reduces to hard parts, then almost nothing unless it interchanges to a newer model. The srx600/700 is next on the chopping block, they are getting old!! 1998 srx is now 19 years old!!!

yes, .......the 98-99 srx crank WILL drop in your cases with the newer outer bearings on stubs......once welded the 98-99 crank is no different or worse then the 2000-02 crank. If done in the aftermarket world they usually weld the center pins as well making it even stronger then the factory unit as Yamaha only welded the conn. rod lower pins, not the center crank pins, same on the viper.

Ok. Exactly what I was wondering. Still like you said before. My cheapest route here is going to be a 98-99 and using the good outer bearings I have here. How necessary is it to weld them? This sled will be piped with SLPs

agree with shaggy.

98 cranks had problems with them moving(that's why Yamaha recalled them), so for 99 Yamaha used a new Loctite to keep them straight but some still moved with studded tracks, blown belt will move a crank also. etc, then in 2000 they welded the pins to stop the problems. all 2000-02 and all year viper welded on pins for conn. rods.... problem solved!

I would weld any 98-99 crank, your just asking for problems if you don't and how many times did you want to tear this engine down??? have it trued and welded, end of problems and end of down time. You can only save a buck or 2 before its gonna bite you in the butt and cost you more then double in money and more importantly, more precious time. You don't get to put a price on time!

Ok yea I wasn't sure if they were problematic. Sounds good thanks KS for the advice
