I have a 97 vmax 500 xtc I've owned since 98 and I didn't realize how bad it handled I now have a 2003 vmax 600er ive been riding and handles awesome . the *** end was all over the place, darting and feels like I don't have much control I did change the full rate setting to hard to take some weight off the skis it handles a lot better but I think I need to take some more off do I soften the front ski spring preload or do I adjust the spring load on the small front shock underneath? I also would like some input on clutch changes

First off you need to add shims under the ski bumper, that will raise the tip of the ski just a hair to prevent darting. Another thing you can do is loosen up your limiter straps on the skid, that will help transfer some weight to the rear of the sled giving you more traction and taking some weight off of the skis. Adjustable transfer rods help a lot too, I have them on both of my sleds, I have a couple extra sets for sale if you would be interested. My 97 sx was all over the place till I did these things to it, now it handles awesome.

My limiter straps aren't even tight right now which is what makes me think the front shock for the track preload is too soft or maybe a bad spring? As for the shim what's the best way to do that I saw one mod for using an old belt and another for like hyfax material ....

I use a piece of slide for the shim
