I'm looking at a 99 Phazer500 fanner, I've always been a Cat guy so I don't know anything about these, Its for my 12yr old daughter hitting the trails
for 2018. I know the basics of sleds just looking for any known issues. I bought a 99 Cat 440Z and then found out it had a one year only engine the same as the sno pro and I had to replace the engine shortly after purchasing it so I want to avoid any issues like that if possible. It has electric start and reverse, I saw a few this winter and was very impressed with them They seem well built, can you still get used parts? That's what keeps me going with my old cats, lots of used parts out there.
Sorry I put in the Topic that its a Vmax, its a Phazer....See I'm new to Yamahas.

Thank you in advance

To be honest I'm fairly new to Yamaha sleds also I bought my 2001 Venture 500 last year one thing I can tell you for sure about the 500 engine is they use a lot of 2 stroke oil and do not get good gas mileage. If I could do it all over again I would hold out for a 700 Triple engine. As soon as I get a smoking deal on a wrecked just cheap sled with a 700 triple I'm planning on putting it in my sled.

The air cooled Phazer is a fine sled. Especially for a girl of 12. Just normal wear and tear items you need to look at. The 500 fanners get better milage than our liquids. Go figure.

The 99 - 01 Phazer 500 is a great beginners sled. They are light enough that a smaller framed person can move them around a bit. Stock they are geared for way more speed then the motor can provide HP for - except in optimum conditions (down-hill, wind at your back, hardpack, etc. LOL). Geared down 11% - 20% they wake up quite a bit. They get around 10 mpg gas, and are fairly easy on oil. I have 2 of them with over 10K miles on them (some I even put on myself) and have seen quite a bit of a couple more. The much maligned ProAction skid actually works pretty good for the era in this sled. Obviously it is nowhere near the quality of ride of any newer skids since 05-06. They just keep getting better and better.

Plus, they are incredibly easy to maintain. Best of the fan engines in that era IMO.

That's great guys, thanks for the info I'm looking at it tmr night. it supposedly only has 4262 K/m on it...the condition will prove that, at least in the pictures its in a garage not out back beside the wood pile.
I looked on Ebay and there seems to be a few parts on there for sale....at least aftermarket still makes pistons and rings for it.
Oh I'm gong to need a service manual. I see one on Ebay for 85$ and a CD version for 15. Does anyone on here have free ones for download so I'm not on here asking dumb questions all the time? If not ill just buy one..
Thank you again for your help.

James.
