This is my first reverse sled 97 VT 500. It seems like I can move the secondary w/shaft back/or forth quite alot more then on my 01 MM before it catches, is something wrong or is it supposed to be like that due to the reverse?

Do you mean in and out or rotational?
Yes that's very common, it has to align with the reverse gear so there is a good amount of play.
