Cut and pasted.

"Lets stop and think about the 4-stroke for a few minutes.

Weight: they will always be heavier, due to many more parts, such as cams, valve train, etc

Parts: many more moving parts, more parts means more potential for problems

Layout: a four-stroke due to design nature of DOHC will always be a taller motor. That equates to a higher C Of G

C of G: the higher the weight is in the chassis, the greater the chassis roll

Responsiveness: a four-stroke does not build RPM's nearly as quickly as a two-stroke. Therefore in order to make the power of a small 2-stroke we must have more displacement.

Funny how when we look at supercross today, we still see 250cc 2-strokes putting the boots to 450cc thumpers. Same with when MOTO GP came in. They used 1000cc 4-strokes to compete against 500cc 2-strokes.

Sorry Yamaha, but you have a ways to go to get me on a 4-stroke.

Make a 600cc 4-stroke that is equal to a 600cc 2-stroke and then maybe I'll have a look."

Yamaha is definately working on it. Lightening up the components in the engine will make a big difference. They took 2 pounds out of the crank alone. That engine is going to spool up alot quicker.

I'd take a new 4 stoke 1000 cc APEX GT with turbo over a new 2 stroke 1000 cc mach any day anytime.

I think once guys start putting turbos on these new efi 4 cylinder 4 strokes they are going to be awesome.

I'd have to agree, though I think Yamaha will be first to oblieterate the technology barriers you've brought up - they're well on their way. 10 years ago I was still riding my multiple Yamaha RZ-350's, mowing with a lawn boy, trimming the yard with and cutting wood with Stihl 2-strokes and riding my '77 Polaris TX-L 340. At that point I consoled myself with the thought they'd never actually be able to make a 4-stroke palatable to the sledding masses (much like the fact that no one buys electric cars - despite all the green hype surrounding them). But Yamaha has clearly proved me wrong.

Personally, it's about preference for me. I have always loved 2-strokes: I love the sound, I love the smell, I love the simplicity, I love power once every rev - I just like their personality and that's something that 4-strokes, no matter how advanced, will ever be able to replicate. If I want a 4 cyl 4-stroke, I can buy a Hyundai (NOT that an RX-1 - or any other Yam 4-stroke sled - should be lumped in with that). But 2-strokes are special, you can't get that sound or feel (when a 2-stroke gets on the pipe) just anywhere and I've always associated it with snowmobiles first and foremost.

I know all the 4-strokers amongst you are thinking of all the advantages you have over 2-strokes: no oil to buy on the trail, smooth, serious reliability and who knows what else. Yep, you're right: I couldn't agree with you more. And that's the beauty of it, everybody can have what they want now! I just wish Yamaha had not abandoned the 2-stroke so completely, they were so good at it.

So make your choice and enjoy the fact that you have a choice now.

Guys its not my post,I was on another site and read it.
Personnally I think the 4 stroke is far more durable than a 2 stroke.
ie Bikes take a hell of a beating and seem to last. :4STroke:

There maybe more things to go wrong with a 4 stroke, but more stuff goes wrong with 2 strokes. the pistons are hotter (not time to cool) no forced lubrication, just a little bit of oil in the gas spray.
why arn't 2 stokes twice as powerful than 4, heres a few reasons: less efficient induction (gets worse as the revs climb), less combustion time.

If you like engines simple, what were you thinking getting a SRX?????
you got 3 carbs, 3 pipes, powervalves and all that mess, coolant lines running to the carbs, an overly complex suspension. electric crap running this way and that. its a real mess in there!

If you cant say positive about Yamaha - dont post it. this is a Yamaha pep rally and anything other than positive will turn into an argument.

I have posted some negative in the past, but I guess my reasoning was not to argue, but hopefuly Yamaha employees may be surfing here.

buy what you like, and only post positive

You can post whatever you like...some of us got sick of all the negative posts about the 06s by people that have no experience with them. The focus of the site is not bashing..this is not AMSNOW or HCS. Yamaha employees do surf here and are members, useless bashing doesn't help. Go ride an 06 and if you still don't like it then post..at least it will be valid.

If you don't like it here...

Yes bleueje17 DoktorC by all means lets continue to congratulate the emperor on his new clothes. It's hard not to notice that anything the least bit negative gets an immediate "how dare you question the emperors new clothes"! Which in MHO makes the site useless to Yamaha staff looking to get an accurate assessment of the markets acceptance of the new product. All hail the 06 Yamahas...... I really, really, really like them all, do I get a demo ride now?

Accurate assessment....exactly. Cannot be accurate unless you've ridden one..or at least seen one! It's not the one negative post that gets me..it's the 15, and the arguing of every point. We definetly need to hear the good and bad for sure!! But why trash talk all new products without seeing them??

I did notice that no one jumped in to defend the new Skidoo Freestyle. Why is it that we can all get in line to declare that a butt ugly POS but not say that the new Yamahas are a disappointment?

Go to a SD website and you'll get the same response...obviously there is some brand loyalty at work. There has been alot of people posting against the bashing of other brands here as well. I think some of the core members are trying to keep the site from losing it's "maturity" level.

I bought a 660 Raptor when they first came out - last year I bought a YZF 450 - it stays right with my 660 and in some conditions kicks its a**! - if what I'm reading about the 06 sleds, the same is true with the new Apex in comparison to the RX-1 - don't under estimate what is happening and what is going to happen with the technology of these 4 stroke motors - I have to be honest, I'm not 100% ready to buy one yet (have not even rode one yet) but I am alot closer to owning one than I was 4 years ago! - the Apex is a sweet looking sled

I hear yah Yammiman, been riding Raptors for several years now. Comparing the Raptor to the YFZ is a pretty harsh comparison for the Raptor though. The Raptor is a tuned for torque trail riding machine and the YFZ is a full-on MX machine. I've considered the 450 but it seems a little hard edged for an old fart like myself. What's it like on a less than full tilt bogey trail ride? Still relatively comfortable? I've heard the seat was like a brick after a while.

The apex gt&rtx look good and I am certain they are built solid- I just wnt a yfz sled, and I really thought Y was going to have one. Oh well - had a super ride today, and that is the important stuff!

I have seen the 06 sleds and this is what I think. 1 The seats are not finished yet (I was told this) and I think they look like crap on the Apex, decent on the Attak, and good on the Mtn. If a small amount was removed off the bottom to expose the tunnel a bit more, seats would look as good as they should feel. Only other gripe is the Mtn Apex needs larger rear wheels! The biggest problem with the sleds is there will be very little to mod on them, good work Yamaha!

yamahay - the Raptor and the YFZ are definetly two different animals - I didn't like my YFZ at first, but now the Raptor feels top heavy in comparison - the linear power is awesome - I'm no spring chicken myself, but I get more of a kick out of the YFZ than the Raptor - won't sell the Raptor though!
bleueje17 - I have not rode the 06's - but my gut tells me the Apex's are going to be the YFZ of sleds - let's not jump to conclusions until we've rode one!

I ride an '01 Polaris 600 XC and the RS Vector that I rode today is superior in every aspect.
It rides better, it corners better, it accelerates harder, it gets better fuel economy and it will be more durable.
If anyone wants a real nice '01 600 XC EDGE X with 4600 miles on it, I know where there is one that is for sale....$3500 takes it!
