Yes I'd say your on the right track lol.That's a mechanical seal and they're a bugger to get out.Once you have it off you'll see the inner bearing and it's held in with a snap ring where you'll need long tip snap ring pliers to get the ring out.

Yep!!!! got it out and new on in with bearings and oil seal.
does some one know the reason for that tiny hole under the engine where the water pump mechanical seal is located???

I'm guessing it has some sort of purpose as the weep hole on an automotive engine waterpump,as a telltale to let you know when the seal has failed.
