just curious if anyone has any thoughts concerns or experience with these new fox air shocks?
i know from experience how a good day turns into a bad day with a blown shock. i was looking at this thing and was wondering what you do when you blow one of these shocks. with no spring to help hold up the front end. it looks like it could be a big mess. anyone have any experience with these things?
obviously blowing a shock would be few and far between with a brand new sled but i guess the possibility is there.
also anyone have any ideas of how often you would rebuild or change seals in these things?
love the new yamahas but this shock has me wondering a little about it in the long run.

The same question was asked to the yamaha engineers and they said this was the first shock ever that has passed yamaha's durability testing, the previous shocks from fox never made it thru the test, he claims they have been testing them very hard, and they give them the thumbs up.

Overall I've never been impressed with the build quality and durability of the Fox products. They may work well but require far too much maintenance. I was amazed that Yamaha will include them from the factory. I think they did it to really promote the ditch banger angle and the weight loss. One of the ATV mags put them on one of their sport quads and by the end of the day the seal was weaping oil. Not very encouraging. I think it's going to be a warranty nightmare for Yamaha, but we'll have to wait and see.

ya i read that same thing about them passing a durability test but as you know those durability tests and real world experiences are quite different.
i guess you could ask any firecat owner about durability tests and real world experience. arctic cat supposedly put the firecats through durability tests and what a mess those sleds were when they came out. stuff breaking and falling off everywhere!!
I trust yamaha and the testing they do but there is something about this shock that has me nervous.
anyway
What i am really afraid of is this thing blowing out 100 miles from home and trying to fifure out how to get the sled home. with out the spring i am assuming your whole front end will be dragging on the ground.
any thoughts on that???

there isn't enough shock travel to allow the front to drag, the shocks aren't just going to fall off so i think you'll be safe from the front end dragging on the ground.

sounds good
so that brings me to my next question.
what kind of damage do you think you would do to the shock by trying to drive the sled home 50-100 or so miles with the shock blown out.
obviously you would try to limp it home, but at 5-10 miles per hr this could take a while
(I think you get what i am saying)
i know that i had to drive an old borrowed polaris home with a blown shock about 4 years ago and when we sent it in for rebuild we were told i destroyed it.
it had to be replaced.
I am not trying to shit on these fox shocks. just dont have any experience with them and was wondering if anyone can curb my fears.

The ride with fox floats is simply amazing. If Yamaha is putting them on a sled from the factory, you should rest assured that will perform flawlessly within reason, as long as regular maintenance is taken care of, just like any shock.
