Just picked up a 2000 srx and having trouble getting it to start. Carbs are all cleaned and I have fresh gas in it. Won’t start but does back fire occasionally when attempting to start. Also, kicks back once in awhile. When pulling it over it will feel like it locks up. I’m thinking possibly a timing issue. Maybe too far advanced? Any ideas.

Did some searching and sounds like it could be the pick up coil in the wrong position and causing plugs to fire too early? I’ll start with checking this.

I have seen the pickup coil actually come loose and be hanging there.
Other thing would be, really rusty flywheel, or crank out of phase.

Or a bad stator

Problem solved. Flywheel was very rusted. Cleaned it up and sled works fine.

Good to hear you figured it out.
A couple of bucks

A light coat of Battery Terminal Protectant will prevent further corrosion.

Thanks for the tip.

My plan, now that the sled seems to run fine, is to restore it. I’m going to pull the motor out and go over everything. There is a lot of corrosion as it sat for 5 years.

I did the same thing.
