Is my shock blown out?

I've got a 99 MM600 that sags about an inch or two with just the weight of the sled, then when you sit on it it sags even more. I can't see any oil seeping from the center or rear shock. I'm thinking the rear is blown and not the front? For replacement do you think a Ryde fx or similar cheapie is better than stock? I don't really want to go with a Works or such as I'm not keeping the sled too much longer. Also how hard is it to remove the outer spring from the shock?
 

ya it sounds like you need a new spring anyway. as for disassembly i dont have a clue. but there might be someting in the tec section.
 
The shock Yamaha puts on their mountain sleds are junk when they are brand new. Find yourself a set of rear viper shocks (XTC or Sxr will work too) . They are easily had for very reasonable price. They are exact replacements in size They are gas and are rebuildable and can be revalved to meet your specific weight and style of riding. I have them on my 02' 700MM, made a big difference. Soc
 
I'm looking at a full set from an 03 Viper right now. I've heard of a "stiff" ride shock that were put on some Vipers. Does anybody know about this and how to tell the difference.

I might be interested in the Viper rears if I don't go for the full set.
 
I have a set of four Viper shocks 2003 Viper Shocks in mint condtion. They have about 875 miles on them.
 
What are you asking for the shocks, I'm just looking for the rears. What I found out from the local dealer today is that I can have my stock ones rebuild for $35 ea. I thought they were just throwaways so I may go that route as this is my 12 year olds sled and he doesn't need anything too heavy duty. Thanks for offering.
 
I ended up getting a full set off of an 02 Viper from ebay. The rears went on no problem, the front Viper shocks are longer of course and wondered what I will have to do make them work. I was reluctant to get the Viper shocks at first because of the stiffness but so far they seem fine, according to my 12 year old who rides this machine. To make the fronts work I'm guessing I would have to get longer control rods?

You can bolt the fronts right on, but they will be partially loaded because of the narrow front rad rods. If you want to get the full use of the long travel fronts, you will need to get the wide front rad rods. Maxdlx
 
Can you give me any tips on how to compress the shocks? Do you bolt the top then jack up the bottom with a floor jack?
 
Howdy, The easiest way is back off the springs completely. You still will have to compress the shock slightly, but they will fit. Jack the sled up so that the skis are off the floor. Take a piece of heavy sting and tie a loop on one end. Now run the string through the tabs(not the bolt holes) on the top mount and around the length of the shock and around the bottom mount. thread the non loop end through the looped end. Next compress the shock about an inch or so and tie it off. You can now easily bolt the shock on. When both bolts are on just cut the string to release the shock. Works slick, I have installed KYB's on a couple of cars I've owned and they come compressed with a string like that. otherwise you would never be able to compress them enough to get them on a car the way their setup. Or, you can just bolt the top bracket on and muscle the lower mount up enough to get the bolt in, but the other way is much easier. Still back off the spring. Hope this helps. Do not forget to readjust the spring and the camber cause it will be off. I went for a ride before I readjusted them and the skis turned hard and didn't handle very good. You will be riding on the outside of the ski. PM me if you need any questions. Soc
