I thought I read somewhere that this was the sign of some larger issue? I have not had a chance to look and see if it simply came apart, but I did take the cable off the back of the speedo and it does not spin when given some throttle. What should I be looking for?

Take the speedo drive housing off the axle. Its under the secondary. Usually the driveshaft bearing goes bad and breaks the speedo coupling thats between the axle and sending unit. JW

thats exactly what happened to my 97 600sx. how many miles?
is there any other possible reasons that the speedo key would get twisted in half, I had the same problem, replaced the key and it works now, but i dont want to run it if that bearing is bad in there. is there an easy way to check if the bearing is bad?

same here. Mine blew out in Munising.
I saw the lower speedo cable end came loose. I've been told the same thing about the 'key' inside the housing.
Local dealer has them for $6.00

The only other thing I have seen that shears the drive pin is an iced up or kinked cable. Usually caused by going for a swim or a belt blowing.

It could also just be the reducer unit locked up, I have had that happen also, speedo stop, checked bearings they were fine. it was just the gears inside the speedo reducer unit has locked up. pull that unit off and check and see if it turns freely first, its an easy check.

i had the same thing happen, gears inside the elbow locked up. Also had ice in between the bearing and the elbow once, which also twisted the key off. Anytime there is any extra stress on it, it'll break real quick, thats what it is designed to do.
