Bench testing starter

Have to put new starter motor in daughters viper. It’s a huge PIA so only want to do once. When I bench test starter I bought it does throw the bindex out. Question is should bindex stay out just bench testing with power or does it need to engage with ring gear to stay out. When bench testing mine it just throws out and retracts.

Disclaimer: this is just my experiences w/ any motorsport or automotive starter. I.E. ... non-expert.

The bendix should be thrown out when starter is energized. Regardless of ring gear. Now .... if it pops in and out(chatters) while it is energized, that's another issue.

Tip... Dry Graph spray coat the helixed part of the shaft.
