I just bought a rebuilt crank for my Viper. When I got the crank I notice that the weld was cracked on the PTO side of the crank. I sent a message to the seller about the cracked weld and he said that the crank was fine and that they used a special Loctite on the crank pin and that was the way they are doing it now. He also said the pins will move slightly when you weld them and put them out of true.
I know that Yamaha use to Loctite them and it didn’t work and that that is why they started welding them.
Does anyone have any information on this new Loctite or is the guy just blowing smoke up my butt.
Thanks

So it cracked before any stress was exerted on it? I know what my course of action would be.

Correct preheating procedure(stepping) was not adheared to.
Somewhat similar to welding cast. But stepping the temp up gradually. Each step needs to be held at that temp for XX?? minutes dependent on the weight.

He said that the weld was cracked on purpose to make a repair and then put back together and trued using this new Loctite. He said that a crank guy by the name of Cranky Joe did the work. I have seen his name come up on other web sites and they say that he is a pretty good crank guy but they were all referencing Ski-Doo and Polaris cranks.
Anyone have any more good feedback on this crank issue? The guy that I bought it from said that he would happily take it back if I wasn’t happy with it. I know that there are a lot of really smart guys on this forum with a lot of Yamaha experience. I have tried to do a search to see if there was any talk about using Loctite on the crank pins but have found nothing. I would like to use this crank so that I can get the sled back on the trail, but I also would like some more feedback so that I can make the right decision.
Any help is appreciated.

No crank expert here but, logically, the SRX and Viper cranks were welded at the factory (after '9 on the outside throws. In order to split the cranks for repair one must break the welds, replace necessary parts, reassemble ensuring the phasing is correct and re-weld the outside throws. I have no idea about using loctite? Does the repair shop offer any guarantee on their work? From your side of things you could express your concern as you have the motor broken down as far as one could and to have a mistake now is huge! I understand your position fully. Can you contact other crank repair facilities (northern crank?) to get their opinion? Wish I could be of more help.
Thanks for your help.
I'll try that.

The seller is feeding you a line. There is no Loctite or epoxy or anything that will hold a crank pin other then a proper weld after they have been trued and indexed.
DO NOT install this crank in your sled it will end badly.
If necessary eat the cost of this crank and get a properly rebuilt crankshaft...chock it up to educational costs.

Take him up on it. Do you really trust that glue(Loctite.....basically) would do the same as a proper weld?? Might just as well JB Weld it to put it in perspective. The guy that I bought it from said that he would happily take it back.
Thanks guys. You helped me to confirm my suspicions. Their is no new loctiti and that it is not the they are doing it now. I'll send it back on Monday.

Good plan.
Thanks guys. You have confirmed suspicions. I have been out of the 2 stroke seen for a while and dident know if things have change in regards to the 700 cranks. I will send it back on Monday and start looking for another one.

I realize we've already talked you into returning it but thought of another correlation. In essence ...... you have have a SRX crank that was installed at the factory in 1998. And we obviously all know about those.

Ya, they were all shit and needed to be welded.
