Here's the situation, traded my 06 summit for a 99 700srx, ran whne i got it but kept backfiring. I've gone through the posts, pulled the engine, tore it down re-sealed the engine completely cause there was nothing wrong with it, crank welded and not out of phase. Wife found a few rub through wires so we went through the whole harness and fixed all broken areas. I cleaned the carbs out many times with my ultra sonic cleaning tub, synced and back on. Fired it up and still backfiring. bought new yamaha coils, installed them and still backfiring. Bought 2 used stators of working teardown sleds and still not working properly. Fires up with fuel down plugs and dies but sounded good while running. Any help is appreciated, i'm ready to get rid of this nightmare and stick to my Mach z.
Thanks

when it starts to die, try flipping choke on. Does it help ?
can it run on half choke well?
if choke affects it for the better, I would guess you have a fuel issue.
You think its not getting enough fuel or too much ?

choke or no choke, issue is still there. tearing the carbs down right now and changing all fuel lines. As per my backfiring issue i'm still stumped

check pulse line going from motor crankcase to fuel pump as well.

Is the inside of the air box dry or not. Are the inside of the pipes wet at well?

Have you thought about replacing the leaky needle seats? Here's the situation, traded my 06 summit for a 99 700srx, ran whne i got it but kept backfiring.
Are the reeds tight against the cages?
Did you replace the plug caps?

Carbs all cleaned, needles seated properly, new coils, caps and plugs, reeds are brand new also. Pulse line is new as long with all the fuel and oil lines. Could it be a regulator or rectifier issue? All my parts are yamaha brand new parts.

I'm lost here so just throwing this out there is the pick up for the ignition keyed? Maybe the flywheel isnt in the correct location? Like a sheared key and it's trying to fire at the wrong time?

No, pick up coil fires when magnets on the flywheel come around.

That's what I mean. Is the flywheel keyed? Or I mean did the flywheel spin it sounds like you've checked anything!!!

Yes, flywheel is keyed, worth a check.

Just another thought,No, pick up coil fires when magnets on the flywheel come around.
Have you removed the recoil and checked everything behind it for rust & corrosion.

flywheels fine and the keyway is brand new and no rust anywhere, the sled sits in my heated shop and never spends a night outside, also new orings on the screen bowls and they were cleaned also

all that is done, you are onto cleaning the clutches next. they get over looked a lot and I was guilty of that.

Would clutches really make it backfire like that? I'm not new to working on these sleds but I would have never looked at clutches for a misfire. Is there any way to swap the ignition pickup fro the sled the is running well and the sled that is backfiring? Wish I was there to help try diagnose this it's very puzzling.
Did you change the plug caps? They made my SX run really strange, and misfire when cold. I would be looking at something electrical still. I've also heard stories of the tail light wire shortening, making the sled a nightmare. Also, is the crank runout checked?

Well I was having similar grief with mine fuel filter was broken off and it plugged those little basket screens where the needle sits in I didn’t realize you could pull those out and were they ever pluggedDid you change the plug caps? so this sled will not fire on its own using the choke unless you put raw fuel into the cylinders?? need better description as to how it starts and back fires, a video will also help diagnoses the problem.

the sled starts and runs, pto cylinder is overloading with fuel, cleaned the carbs many time, new needle and seats coming in the morning. Hopefully solves my issue, the joy's of buying someone elses junk
