What Is the best way to do this? Right now the primary is lined up (parallel)with the piece of the chasis that is riveted in (brace piece). It's an 01 Vmax 500. Right now if I throw it in reverse at about idle to about 2200 without me on it, it will walk backwards on pavement. Belt to tight or does this seem about right?

Alignment needs to be between the 2 clutches. Alignment with the sled itself doesn't buy you anything. There are several tools available, as well as instructions to make your own in the Tech Pages. The SledPro is probably the best but pricey.

You can also simply use a straight edge and a ruler or caliper to set alignment, but it takes a bit of time especially if you need to move the motor. I have used 2 finish nails and the rule from a combination square to set center to center. I used a piece of square stock that was checked for straightness and a caliper to check alignment. Check front and back of secondary on the top and the bottom to ensure 4-way alignment.
