!998 XTC 700 skid frame center shock spring upgrade?

Hello , I have a 98 700 XTC I have owned since new, I read about replacing the center shock spring with one from a SX or SRX sled.
My question is does it matter what year and should it be from a SXr sled with long travel like my XTC?
This spring from the 99 SX is (K=6.0) UR and costs $69.89
This spring from the 2000 SX is (K=18N/Nm) UR and costs $36.65
I have no idea what the numbers mean.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The XTC spring is too soft, a SXR or Viper spring will be much better.
both are long travel, like your XTC.
